Note 1, Gwen VINGOE was living in Stocksfield, Northumberland in 1984 when she wrote a letter to Marie Vingoe McDonough (nee Chapman) in Melbourne, Australia. Mairie Vingoe McDonough's daughter Susan visited her some time after.
".....my eldest brother and I went once to the Treville farm mentioned. This was about thirty years ago.... . We forced our way through bracken and gorse down to the nearest piece of beach, to try to find 'the deep caverns in the Treville cliff '. We were not successful... but, as we were sitting among the stones in the bay, the tide came in and the sun was low on the horizon. There was a large boulder of red sandstone standing tall by itself and when the sea surrounded it the waves were reflected on it and, for a few moments, the effect really was 'like chains of fire ascending' the rock. I think I have never seen anything similar before or since." To read more about the legend of the "Chains of Fire: the Death Token of the Vingoes" and other Vingoe tales go HERE. |

Fact 1 James Henry Vingoe was originally a gardener but he travelled several times to Calumnet and Hecla mines in Upper Peninsula ; Michigan . I have found him on trips between 1900 -1904 passing through Ellis Island. Below is a copy of the ships manifest for a voyage he took on board the S.S. New York which left Southampton on the 28th April 1900. James is listed as No 10 on the list amongst a group of Cornish miners who all state that they are going to stay with their Cousin James Glasson. Cornish miners were always known as Cousin Jacks because, it is said, if ever a mine manager wanted more men, he would ask a Cornishman if he knew anybody who would be suitable and the reply would always be - 'es me 'ansum, me cousin is just the boy for 'e. ![]() Mayor 1926-1927 and Alderman 1922-1948 George
Davey [1874-1954] served on Strathfield Council for 26 years and was
Mayor in 1926-27. Photo of George Davey was taken in 1938. Davey’s
long period of involvement on Strathfield Council was marked by many
achievements. His period in office coincided with a rapid expansion in
residential development in Strathfield and Davey advocated extensions of
street planting schemes, acquisition of land for public parks and
planting of trees and shrubs in parks, gardens and reserves.
When the Strathfield Railway Station was extended in the
1920’s, Davey insisted on acquiring additional land on the southern
side of the Station and instead of the proposed road width of 40 feet,
he demanded 100 feet. Strathfield
Council contributed £3000 to the road acquisition.
This land today is the Strathfield Town Centre.
Davey Square and Davey Square Memorial are named for him. Davey was the managing director of flour millers Edwin Davey & Co. His daughter Mabel, married aviator and flour miller Nigel Love.
George
Davey was active in many community activities including the Strathfield
Methodist Church and he was Treasurer of Methodist Ladies College [MLC]
in Burwood for 25 years. He lived at ‘Koorianda’ 5-7 Broughton Rd,
which is now heritage listed. Written

The Maria
Massacre The tragic story
of Thomas & Kitty Daniel nee Vingoe Kitty Vingoe was baptised in the parish of Madron in Cornwall on the 24th of July 1806 the sixth child of William and Constance Rodda of Boswarva. In 1825 she married Thomas Hoskin Daniel of Sancreed and went to live in St Buryan. Over the next seven year she gave birth to five children. Thomas, her husband made his living as a basket maker and skilled men such as him were being offered a new life for their families in Australia with free passage so in 1839 Kitty and Thomas decided to leave Cornwall and emigrate to Australia. For some unknown reason they only took four of their children with them. The youngest daughter Lavinia who was born on the 4th Dec 1832, is recorded on the 1841 census living with her grandparents William & Constance Vingoe at Boswarva in Madron. Kitty and her family sailed for Australia onboard the sailing vessel “Asia” and arrived in Adelaide in July 1839. They settled in Long Plains on the Yorke Peninsular but during the next year all the children died in the various epidemics that swept through the Township. After the death of their last child Kitty and Thomas decided to leave Long Plains and once more try to make a new start in Tasmania. The couple were sailing to Hobart, Tasmania [ Van Diemans Land ] aboard the "Maria" when they were shipwrecked and met a tragic end sometime in June of 1840.
